Issue 18 of Herald of Europe magazine is opened with an essay by its Editor-in-Chief Victor Yaroshenko entitled “Time of big hope”. This is a reflection in a form of letters from editorial office which makes one think of the context of the magazine, field in which we operate and events that are most notable to us.
In their article “Russia and Europe – what is to come?” Russian researchers from a department of European law Sergey Kashkin and Paul Kalinichenko submerge the reader into the complexities of the legal field and discuss agreements of partnership and cooperation.
In CONTEMPORARY ARCHIVE rubric we offer an overview of events, documentary witness accounts and newspaper articles of last quarter.
The complex article by Yuri Davydov – “At which shore will the Balkans anchor?” prepares the reader for development of the usual theme within our magazine – problem areas of civilization. The same circle of questions is addressed by the minutes of the seminar at the Institute of Europe of Russian Academy of Sciences – “At the seams of civilizations. Mediterranedan – Black Sea — Caspian.”
In the rubric entitled CONFERENCE we publish materials of this year’s international conference by the Institute of Economics of Transitional Period. Here you can find texts by Carl Bild, Calman Mijey, Marek Dombrovski, Mart Laar, Igor Artemyev, Yevgeny Yasin, Anatoly Chubais, and also selected quotations from addresses by forum participants.
Our special representative in Rome Alexander Sergiyevsky, have prepared the material entitled: “The anatomy of terrorism: ten questions to Sergio Romano”, this material completes the section CONTEMPORARY LIFE.
The section LITERATURE this time is wholly devoted to poetry. We publish: Anatoly Naiman, Svetlana Vasilieva, Irina Znamenskaya, Andrey Gritzman and Ugine Li-Hamilton.
In section HISTORY in the rubric Dialogues in Depth we are discussing architecture: Philip Johnson and Oscar Niemeyer –
two personalities and two legends in architecture of the 20-th century.
On Islam: Gregory Pomerants. Islam of Orianna Fallachi and Islam of Peter Voge.
Section CULTURE is opened by the essay notes of professor Alisher Faiz, from Dushanbe: “Cambridge or notes from intellectual’s heaven.”
In the rubric artes and also all over the issue we present works by photographer Alexander Tiagny-Ryadno. Here one can also find rubric Mix, chronicle of cultural life and information on art happenings, auctions, festivals and exhibitions.
We mark the 80-th birthday of Andjei Vaida by publishing an essay by Adam Michnik: “Ash, uhlan, polonez”, in a new translation.
Photo biennale -2006 is reviewed y Natalia Novikova.
The issue is concluded by BOOK REVIEW section.
