Volume sixteen of the Herald of Europe magazine is devoted to a range of contemporary issues. Some highlights include:
The opening article by our Editor-in-Chief ,Victor Yaroshenko. Under the title, “Eternal Question” Victor Yaroshenko discusses changes of paradigm, cardinal changes and small adjustments. The essay is written in the form of letters from the editorial office and diary entries. Among the subjects touched upon are Portugal, Ukraine, the Russian question, Russia-Poland relations, earthquakes and Dostoevsky.
One of the ideas raised both in the Contemporary Archive section and in the above mentioned essay, the failure of the European referendum and the crisis of the European constitution, is developed in Artem Chetverikov’s article, “Can the European Constitution be saved?”
Andrei Medushevski examines the subject of bordering democracies using examples of the Portuguese revolution and experiences of Spain in his article, “Contract model for a shift towards democracy”.
From countries on the edge of Europe we shift our gaze to the Ukraine, which has lately been attracting particular attention. We publish a study by Igor Yakovenko, culturologist and specialist in civil affairs, “Ukraine and Russia – stories of relevance”.
Igor Burnashov presents discussions on European integration using examples from the 1980’s.
The Contemporary section, “Life”, is completed by conversations between
Jose Louis deVillalionga and the King of Spain containing memories of a transitional epoch that is not well-known in Russia.
In the Literature section we publish four short stories by Tadeusz Rujevic who visited the September 2005 book fair. A short story by Nikolai Klimontovich “How to fall from the Moon”. Poems by Rupert Brooke, chapters from Annemarie Selinko’s book “Desire” and a poem by John Burnside.
In the Historical section we publish a text that was prepared especially for the Herald of Europe magazine, the interview with Cheslav Milosh: The World After Expulsion and also a tractate by Seren Kjerkegor.
In the Culture section, as well as the usual cultural chronicle, library of the Herald of Europe, reviews and rubric Province we also publish a text by our regular author Evgeny Popov, “Italy under an Icy Rain”, real letters of a Russian traveller.
Vsevolod Bagno discusses types of Russian Don Quichotery – this year is the 400th anniversary of Cervantese’s hero.
The colour inset is dedicated to Goya desde Goya.
The Arts section contains a study of contemporary Ukranian art in Galina Sklyarenko’s “Dreamland-Ukraine”.
Another highlight is an interview given by Lord Robertson of Port Ellen to our magazine in which Lord Robertson talks about European security, world order and perspectives of culture and politics.
