On the border of the years 2002 and 2003 “The Herald of Europe” acquaints the readers in the Contemporary Section “Life “ with Karl Gref Bellerstrem’s research “The prerequisites and limits of democracy”. Charles William Maynes’, the president’s of “Eurasia” Foundation article “Philanthropy and globalization in Russia” continues the topic of globalization started in the previous issues of the journal. Professor Boris Orlov’s publication “European values in the context of globalization processes” presents a view from Russia on this subject. Dieter Bach’s research “Europe with a human face or ethical consensus in Europe” stands by itself. Based on personal observations of the scientist it raises the problem sharply.
The international section of the issue is dedicated to one more “burning” hotbed of Europe and continues the line of study of the European space problems, conducted by the journal. The single bloc on the problems of South Caucasian region opens with Thomas de Waal’s article “Security and insecurity in the South Caucasus”. Alexander Rondeli’s “South Caucasus and Russia” and Alla Yazkova’s “States of South Caucasus in the new geopolitical dimension” represent views respectively from Georgia and Russia. Both they turn the bloc into a sui generis dialogue and add objectivity to the study.
Professor Dimitry Danilov has chosen for his examination the following question “Russia and the West: no longer enemies , but who?”, while Constantine Chellini has made an effort to answer the question “Does Europe need immigration?”
In the “Literature” section of our journal under the “Rage of Day” heading the reader will find the final history of the story in persons about Khabarov and Gdov in the last published in the year 2002 story by Eugene Popov “Materia. The story on the unarticulate”. A well –known critic Svetlana Vasilyeva here makes her dйbute in the poetic genre with her “Four elegies”. A less known young prose-writer Alexander Selin publishes his story “Snake”. In the same section are also published poems by Irina Znamenskaya, a poetess, who doesn’t need any special introduction.
Our journal is glad to introduce to the reader Eugene Rhein’s prose. This publication won’t leave indifferent all those admiring the talent of the well-known poet, who tries himself in an unusual genre.
The Russian-language literary section of the journal is finished with two publications – poems of Roman Solntsev – a publicist, poet and editor from Krasnoyarsk and the story by our colleague Vladimir Kantor “The sense of life”.
“Tell me that you love me”: Erich Maria Remark – Marlen Dietrich. Letters of different years, translated by Eugene Faktorovich, reveal the complexity of the relationship of two distinguished people of the last century.
The section is closed with the chapters from the book “Table Talks with Winston Oden” and the continuation of Peter Akroyd’s novel.
In the “History” section we publish the “Meetings” by Arnold Joseph Toynbee. Vasily Shukin continues his arguments on the “Between poles: On organicity and destinability of Westernism”. The biographic article by Walter Benjamin “Paul Valery” is a real revelation of this issue. In the “Contemporary archive” section we publish the materials of the conference of The All Russia Library of Foreign Literature “Islam and Christianity”: Mehdi Sanai’s “Dialogue of civilizations and Islamic factor” , A.V. Torkunov’s “On the dialogue between great world religions”, Alexei Jouravski’s “ On some theological themes in the modern dialogue between Islam and Christianity” . Valery Senderov’s study is devoted to Russian civilization as the code of Eurasian Christianity.
Under the heading “200 years of Karamzin’s the “Herald of Europe” the jubilee theme is crowned with philologist Lyuba Sapchenko’s article “Cultural Hero”. The author once again addresses the genius of the famous founder of the first “Herald of Europe”. Geoffrey Hosking’s “Why we need the history of trust” makes an elegant ending of the section.
In the “Culture” section of this issue of the journal we publish a study on Margaret Duras by Natalya and Sergei Isaevs “I’m looking at you through the pupils of your eyes”. The art-historian William Mayland studies St Petersburg’s Barbison. In the same section are also represented two essays by Elena Krishtof “The French connections” and “Musicle in the royal theatre”. Modern chronicles from Budapest, Paris, Latvia and London acquaint the reader with the international novelties of the passing season.
In the ARTES rubric we acquaint the reader with photoworks by Alexander Tyagni-Ryadno “Paris”. The study of the expansion of fashion boundaries by a young writer Kaufman-Nalivaiko is devoted to the metaphysics of fashion. We’ve also prepared to the reader the conversation with Andrew Bitov “And here has a book appearedЕ” In the “European club” of our journal we talk about “Europe of the spirit” and caliber on water-melons with Elein Carrиre d’Encausse and on flood and cultural values with Martin Roth, the keeper of the Dresden Gallery, who was the guest of “The Herald of Europe” radio-program.
A wide essay by our well-known author Samuil Lurie “Gulliver and a swallow” opens the review section of our journal.
The Budapest charter, the document adopted at the meeting of editors-in-chief of the intellectual European journals in December 2002, a printed here not just because of its curiosity. The issue is closed with some reviews on lately published books.
