SUMMARY

The issue begins with Sergey Averintsev’s word of congratulation on the occasion of the eightieth birthday of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, a well-known writer, public figure and Nobel prize winner.
The poetry section presents new poems by Sergei Alikhanov, Lev Smirnov, Ritaly Zaslavsky, Roman Solntsev, Yevgeny Khramov, Alexander Sorokin and Olga Kuchkina, as well as by poems by famous Italian poet Angelo Maria Rippelino in translation by Yevgeny Solonovich.
We are publishing the novel “The Self-Taught Men” by Anton Utkin, the narrative “The Prodigal Summer. Scenes from Out-of-the-Way Life” by Oleg Larin and “Short Stories about Wonders” by Nina Gorlanova, a writer from the city of Perm.
The section “Polemics” presents the article “Time and Eternity” by Marina Novikova; the section“Publications and Reports” contains the material “Hunting in the Revolutionary Preserve” by Vitaly Shentalinsky concluding his series of publications based on the documents from the KGB’s archives and dealing with the fortunes of literature and literary men in the time of Stalin.
In the section “Les Essais” we are publishing the essay “The Three Monuments” by Rustam Rakhmatulin on the elements of the metaphysical landscape of Moscow.
Literary criticism of the issue is presented by the article “The Old Russian” by Olga Slavnikova on the late prose by prominent Russian writer Sergei Zalygin who will mark his eighty-fifth birthday in December.
In the section “Editor’s Mail” we are publishing letters by Vadim Kozhinov and Vadim Baranov entering into polemics with the materials previously published in the “Novy Mir”.
