The Great Patriotic War and the Victory over fascism are everlasting themes to which in this issue are dedicated paintings and war lyrics by the veteran of the war LEONID RABICHEV and also poems by OLEG KHLEBNIKOV, poet of another generation, born ten years after the Victory, our regular author who became this year’s laureate of the New Pushkin Prize.
As time goes further from the Great Patriotic War more and more often the memoirs of its eye-witnesses become the memoirs of the childhood. Those who fought at the war-fields are becoming fewer and fewer; most of those caught by the war and still living saw it with children eyes. The experience of grasping the life in its very beginning through the war is unforgettable, it lasts forever. Under the heading “Children and the War” we let have the floor to the people who one way or another have graduated from this “school”.

Palimpsest. This word involuntary comes into one’s mind while reading the novel. In bygone days they named so a manuscript written on the parchment which had already been used. Sometimes the old letters showed through the new ones. Later it became usual to do so with frescoes, icons and paintings. Until now there is no pursuit more fascinating for a restorer than taking layer by layer off to reach the initial image. In the same way the reader of this novel step by step will be discovering the source of the mystical events that happened to the author and characters of the manuscript discovered in a burnt down house of a neglected village.
SHAMAHAD ABDULLAEV from Fergana presents his poems. Poet from Riga SERGEI MOREINO presents his essay “Shamahad – Double Midday” in which he confesses: “I had a presentiment about him. With his coming everything took its place”.
